This is a combination position, often in support of the chef or steward, but with deckhand responsibilities. You will be required to have completed your STCW’95 course in fire fighting at sea, first aid at sea, sea survival, pre-sea and social responsibility.

This position exists mainly in the luxury yacht and passenger or ferry operation industries. It is a hard working position that requires some boat knowledge, but also experience in fields such as hospitality or catering, nanny or au-pair, medical, maintenance or engineering.

It is essentially a service position, requiring interaction and in many cases 5 or 6 star service to guests. The most promising field of employment would be the luxury yacht industry and salaries are around $2000 to $3000 + a month with usually a month paid leave and travel expenses from the boat and back included.

Although employment opportunities do exist in South Africa, areas of operation are mainly abroad, being Caribbean / U.S., Mediterranean / Europe, but Indian Ocean islands and various other cruising destinations may offer opportunities.
